A recent social media debate over whether delivery addresses should be vague — listing only the neighborhood name rather than specific building and unit numbers — has highlighted tensions between privacy concerns and delivery efficiency in China's courier industry.

The debate was sparked by a social media post in which a user, after experiencing a delayed package and an irritable callback from her courier, said she would henceforth use only the name of her residential compound on deliveries — to avoid potential conflict and limit the number of people who know her exact address.
Supporters argued vague addresses protect vulnerable groups, especially women living alone, while opponents warned of delivery delays and missed parcels. Some netizens contended the real issue is not address specificity, but whether delivery companies truly prioritize user privacy and door-to-door service.
Interviews with delivery staff in Guangzhou revealed that imprecise addresses force extra phone calls for confirmation, often wasting time when customers cannot specify their location.

Couriers noted that dropping parcels at lockers without verification risks customer complaints and fines, while perishables left undelivered due to missing contact information may spoil and incur compensation claims — making the process more cumbersome, not simpler.
Peng Peng, a policy researcher, suggested that platforms adopt a virtual-number relay system, similar to ride-hailing apps, giving consumers the choice to anonymize their calls while still enabling door-to-door delivery — offering a middle ground between privacy and convenience.
