Balogun was sent off for stamping on defender Tarik Muharemovic during the US 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the World Cup round of 32 on July 1. Last Sunday, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee imposed a one-match suspension on Balogun but suspended the enforcement of the sanction for a one-year probationary period - under Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, allowing the US leading scorer to remain eligible for Monday's round-of-16 clash against Belgium.

According to sports statistics provider Opta, no player had ever appeared in his team's next FIFA World Cup match after receiving a red card since the introduction of the yellow and red card system in 1970.

特朗普：曾與國際足聯主席通電話

特朗普6日在白宮對媒體證實，他確實就美國隊球員巴洛貢紅牌一事與國際足聯主席因凡蒂諾通了電話，不過“并沒有指揮因凡蒂諾該怎么做”。

特朗普稱，如果比利時能戰勝美國隊，那比利時隊會很自豪，但他自己會說這比賽“有黑幕”，就像2020年美國總統大選一樣……

Trump confirmed that he asked FIFA to review Balogun's red card suspension before the organization reversed its decision, allowing the star striker to participate in Monday night's match, NBC News reported.

"I asked for a review by FIFA," Trump said, responding to a reporter's question during an Oval Office event Monday. At the same time, Trump said he had "nothing to do with the decision".

國際足聯的這一決定引發多方質疑。比利時足協發表多篇聲明，表示對這一決定“感到震驚”。歐足聯也發聲明表示，這一決定“越過了紅線”，將對整個足球世界產生消極影響。

The ruling drew strong criticism from the Belgian Football Association, which issued statements expressing "astonishment" at the decision. European football governing body UEFA also condemned the ruling, saying it had "crossed a red line" and could have negative consequences for the game as a whole.

比利時足協于6日提出申訴，但卻在開賽前夕得到了國際足聯不予受理的正式答復。按照國際足聯的說法，不予受理的理由是“比利時足協并非相關程序的當事方，因此無權就該決定提出上訴”。

今天出場的巴洛貢并沒能成為美國隊的救星。相比圍繞他產生的巨大爭議，他對比賽走勢的影響十分有限——真正決定比賽結果的，依舊是兩支球隊在場上的整體表現。比利時隊用一場優勢明顯的大勝，給出了有力的證明。
