《周處除三害》的電影名來自一個典故。《世說新語》記載，周處年少時兇暴強悍，被鄉人認為是一大禍害，但卻不自知。其余兩個禍害是蛟龍和白虎。有人勸周處斬之而后快。大戰三天三夜后，鄉人以為禍害皆除，于是互相慶祝。周處回來后看到這番景象，悔悟之前行徑惡劣，成為一名忠臣孝子。

但如果英文名直譯為 Zhou Chu Eliminates the Three Evils，很多外國觀眾不懂。于是片方采用了歸化的譯法，省略人名，并且用佛教的觀念將「三害」升華為「三毒」，英文為 three poisons 或「三不善根」 three unwholesome roots。分別對應 greed「貪」、hate「嗔」、delusion「癡」。

佛教用 pigeon「鴿子」、snake「蛇」和 pig「豬」具象化三毒，并且將其畫在 Bhavacakra「有輪」或稱「生命之輪」中。因此這部影片的英文名定為 The Pig, the Snake and the Pigeon。

riveting

派生自動詞 rivet，表示 to hold sb's interest or attention so completely「深深吸引，迷住」。所以 riveting 意思是「令人著迷的，引人入勝的」。我們可以用它來替換用了無數遍的 attractive, interesting。《經濟學人》在介紹有關三星的書籍時，用了這個形容詞。

unfiltered

filter 是四級詞匯，表示「過濾器」，加上 paper 就變成了「濾紙」，比如 coffee filter papers「咖啡濾紙」。空氣凈化器中的「濾芯」也是 filter。另外，它也有動詞詞性，自然就是「過濾」之義。所以 unfiltered 是指「未被過濾的」。

除了過濾液體、氣體等物質，我們也可以過濾信息、內容等。于是誕生了它的引申義「篩選，過濾」，英文為 to use a special program to check the content。有些家長為了省事，直接塞給孩子手機，沒有正確引導，導致孩子攝入了很多 unfiltered information。我們來造個句。

兒童會接觸到許多未經過濾的信息，這些信息弊大于利。

storyline

指的是 the basic story in a novel, play, film or movie，即小說、戲劇、電影等的「故事情節」，相當于 plot。

如果你知道這部電影的英文名稱，肯定就知道這個單詞的意思了。沒錯，就是那部鼎鼎大名的 The Shawshank Redemption《肖申克的救贖》。

提問：redemption 的動詞是誰呢？是不是答成 redempt 啦？其實是 redeem。常用來表示「補救，補償」，相當于 make up for，compensate for。這條釋義脫胎自它的宗教義，即「救贖」，所以 self-redemption 是「自我救贖」。

The excellent acting wasn't enough to redeem a weak plot.

精彩的表演不足以掩蓋情節的拙劣。

authenticity

對應的形容詞是 authentic，表示 true and accurate「真實的」。所以要想問某個產品是不是「正品」，就問它是不是 authentic。比如， an authentic Rolex 是指「正品勞力士」。因此名詞 authenticity 是「真實性，可靠性」。

The poems are supposed to be by Sappho, but they are actually of doubtful authenticity.

narrative

考研詞匯

這個單詞在《西部世界》中經常出現。narrative 來自拉丁語 narrativus，意思是 a description of events, especially in a novel「描述，敘述」，有時也會被譯為「故事」。相當于 description，是一個可數名詞。比如，a gripping narrative 是指「一段吸引人的敘述」。narrative 可以是虛構的，比如小說、電影中的故事；也可以是非虛構的，比如歷史記錄、新聞報道、個人經歷的敘述等。

這個詞還有其他釋義，更為抽象和多變，其翻譯問題曾困擾過我，所以印象更加深刻。另外，它也可以是 the act, process or skill of telling a story「敘事過程」或「敘事技巧」。所以文中 offer raw and authentic narratives 意思是「提供粗糲自然和真實敘事」。看上去簡單，但很多時候我們無法直譯，需要結合語境來理解。大家可以平時留意下。

下面我們來看 2023 年考研翻譯中的 brand narrative，中文常譯為「品牌敘事」。這是啥？簡而言之，品牌敘事是指一個品牌用來傳達其歷史、使命、價值觀，以及與消費者建立情感連接的一系列內容。

acclaim

考研詞匯

兼有動詞、名詞兩種詞性，不管是哪種，都是非常正面的。作動詞時，表示 to praise someone or something publicly「稱贊，推崇」，相當于 speak highly of。比如 a highly acclaimed performance 意思是「備受贊譽的演出」。經常用于被動語態，構成 be acclaimed as「被譽為」。

作名詞時，acclaim 是指「贊揚，高度評價」，可以替換 praise。下圖《婚姻故事》用了名詞 acclaim。

He was acclaimed as England's greatest modern painter.

他被譽為英格蘭現代最偉大的油畫家。

critical

熟詞生義 + 四級 +考研詞匯

critical 在原文中不是「批判的」，也不是「關鍵的」，而是 using or involving careful judgment about the good and bad「評論性的，判斷審慎的」。當它和 acclaim 搭配時，也就是原文中的 critical acclaim，意思就成了「高度評價」或譯為「好評如潮」。

The book came out last year to great critical acclaim.

這本書去年出版，受到高度評價。

shy away from sth

熟詞生義

此處的 shy 不是形容詞「害羞的」，而是動詞，構成了一個固定短語，表示 to avoid doing sth because you are nervous or frightened，通常是因為缺乏信息或者緊張所以「回避，畏懼」某事。比如，shy away from your responsibilities 是指「逃避責任」。2021 年英二考研翻譯真題就用過這個短語。

The researchers also argued that when we shy away from casual interactions with strangers, it is often due to a misplaced anxiety that they might not want to talk to us.

研究人員還認為，我們之所以避而不與陌生人閑聊，通常是由于不必要的憂慮，擔心他們可能不想和我們說話。
