A 28-year-old woman in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, identified by the pseudonym Wang Yunyi, fractured her right ankle in three places after slipping while wearing rubber clogs on a rainy day. She lost her footing while stepping over a parking bollard and was unable to walk. Doctors used 13 screws to stabilize the fracture, and they are expected to remain in place until a follow-up operation next year.
Wang said she had chosen the clogs for their convenience, but their poor grip on wet surfaces contributed to the fall.

Known for their comfort and convenience, clogs have become a staple among young people. They are jokingly described on social media as "shoes permanently welded to your feet". Users have even coined playful names for different ways of wearing them: with the heel strap forward it's "chill mode", while fastening it behind the heel is known as "combat mode".

Clogs-related ankle sprains are common in summer clinics, Xu Hailin, chief physician of theorthopedicdepartment at Peking University People's Hospital, said. The loose fit makes feet and shoes move out of sync, and risks spike on stairs, uneven ground, or in rain. Thick, ultra-soft "pillowy" soles are especiallyhazardous— they amplify instability, like walking in high heels on mud.
Another overlooked hazard: worn-out soles. Over time, the treads on clogs get smoothed down, drastically reducing traction — and compromising safety.

Despite their perforated look, clogs are poorly ventilated and don't absorb sweat at all. When feet perspire, moisture gets trapped inside, creating a hot, damp environment that's a perfect breeding ground for fungi.

Even more concerning: after summer rains, many people wade through puddles in their clogs. If the standing water contains fungi, direct contact with bare skin significantly raises the risk of athlete's foot.
To wear clogs safely: opt for loose styles with absorbent cotton socks to reduce friction and wick moisture. Avoid rain, puddles, and intense physical activity. Clean regularly with warm soapy water, scrubbing holes and soles, and keep both feet and shoes dry.
R (Rest)
I (Ice)
C (Compression)
E (Elevate)
